Sculptural Woodturning
by Gary A. Zeff

Although we can’t determine exactly when woodturning began, it is believed to have started about 3000BC-when the Sumerians invented the wheel. Architectural and utilitarian objects were the turners’ trade until the middle of the 20th Century when wooden bowls were created as artistic objects. From the 1970’s on, woodturning has grown exponentially and has now reached the status of glass, metal and ceramics in the art world.
